“Number of Minnesota Children Living in Poverty up 56 Percent.” Kare11.com. Gannett, 28

I chose to direct my project toward the living conditions those living in poverty experience every day.  Although historically Minnesota has had one of the lowest poverty rates in the country, that fact is losing its validity.  The poverty rate is up to nearly 11% of our population, or about 544,000 people, and nearly 200,000 of those are children.  Living in poverty from a young age can have many effects on a developing child.  Not only are there health and safety risks, growing up in a stressful situation can impact brain development, and it has been shown those who grow up in poverty are more like to struggle in school.  There are many groups committed to ending poverty, but yet the poverty rates continue to increase.  I think there are a lot of little things we can do to help poverty, but overall it is an issue that is caused by poor decisions and somewhat by government trying to intervene.  Poverty is something that will probably never be wiped out completely, but the numbers definitely need to start improving.
